Your wedding day is a momentous occasion, a culmination of dreams and love that deserves to be nothing less than perfect. As you envision walking down the aisle, the anticipation of that special day is filled with excitement, joy, and a touch of nerves. Amidst all the planning and preparations, one crucial step stands out as the ultimate pre-wedding experience - the bridal hair and makeup preview.
Your preview is the chance for you to get to know your artists and collaborate on your bridal vision to make it a reality. In this blog, we invite you to step into the enchanting world of bridal beauty previews, uncovering everything from the significance of this pre-wedding ritual to insider tips on how to make it an unforgettable part of your wedding journey.
Makeup Preparation for a Successful Preview:
Please arrive with clean skin- avoid wearing makeup to your preview. You can lightly moisturize skin if you'd like, but please no heavy serums or oil based products. I will be prepping your skin accordingly at the start of your appointment.
Establish a daily skincare regimen to keep your skin balanced and supple. If you're unsure where to start, it's always best to see an esthetician for a skin analysis so they can recommend products based on your skin type. For a simple routine, it's best to wash your skin twice daily, exfoliate 2-3 times a week, and moisturize daily. Exfoliation will play a major role in how the makeup sinks into your skin. Makeup will cling onto dry patches and create a cakey appearance.
Book your spray tan appointment for a day or two prior to your preview if you're considering one for your wedding. This is a service that I offer (as a bonus I do give group specials!).
Avoid sun exposure the week leading up to your appointment. Makeup does not adhere to sunburned skin, so you might notice slippage.
Groom or wax any fuzzy areas about a week prior. Please do not wax within 3 days prior to your appointment as your skin will be sensitized. Dermaplaning facials are also fantastic for makeup applications- it not only removes the dead skin cells on the surface but it also removes peach fuzz for a smooth application.
Consider your eye color and wedding color palette when searching for inspo. For more realistic expectations, look for inspo with features similar to yours.
Keep in mind that event makeup is typically heavier than everyday makeup! While we specialize in airbrush to keep it looking skin-like and lightweight, you will still probably feel like you have on more makeup than usual. Even simple, no-makeup makeup looks require a good amount of product.
Hair Preparation For a Successful Preview:
Unless a blow-out has been scheduled prior to your appointment, you should arrive with clean, dry hair. Please wash and blow dry hair the morning of your appiontment or the night prior. Air drying can cause excess moisture at your scalp which contributes to frizziness.
After washing, do not apply any leave-in products such as serums or oils.
Do not apply any heat to your hair after blow drying. Do not flat iron your hair! If you find that your hair has a hard time holding a curl, or if your hair is fine, you should use a mousse after washing your hair before blow drying focusing mainly at the roots. I love the Kenra Volume Mousse 12 (you can find it on our Amazon store front here).
If you're considering a down style, especially the ever popular and beautiful Hollywood glam waves, we highly recommend purchasing clip-in extensions. Extensions will not only give you extra volume, but they will also help build a foundation within your style to keep your hair in place all night long! We're partnered with Bellami and Googoo to offer the best options to our brides. You can check out those options here. If you need assistance finding your shade match or size please let us know and we will point you in the right direction.
Bring your hair accessories! You don't need to bring your veil unless you absolutely want to. Most veils have a comb insert and we will show your maid of honor or bridesmaid on wedding day how to insert it into your hairstyle.
When looking for inspo photos it's best to look for styles with a similar color and texture to yours. Also keep in mind the neckline and back of your bridal gown, the time of year, and whether your venue is indoors or outdoors.
Curly Girl Hair Preparation
Embrace the curls! If you're opting to enhance your curls, it's best to start with a solid curly routine. Finding the best products that work well to moisturize your curls and reduce frizz will be key in locking down your bridal look.
You can prep your hair as you normally do. Wash, and apply products as normal. We recommend avoiding any heavy oils that may weigh down your curls. If you typically air dry, please wash it with enough time to be fully dry prior to your appointment. We also recommend diffusing your hair if you're in a time crunch.
If you wish to go with a smooth style, it's best to wash your hair and blow dry it smooth. You don't need to straighten it to get it smooth, but as long as you can eliminate most frizz we can work with the volume!
Other helpful tips:
Wear a neckline similar to your wedding gown. This will allow you to visualize your hairstyle on wedding day.
Wear neutral colors or a color similar to your gown. This will prevent any clashing of the makeup tones.
Avoid doing your appointment too far from wedding day- with time comes preference changes and personal style changes. We recommend doing your appointment for engagement photos or 2-3 months prior to your wedding.
Have a few inspo photos on hand
We love to see photos of your gown to draw inspiration! We understand if you don't want to show it off too early- but if you want to share photos with us we will beam with excitement!
Overall, this is a chance for us to get to know each other and create cohesion within not only your wedding day hair and makeup, but within your bridal party as well. As you embark on this exciting journey toward your wedding day, remember that your bridal hair and makeup preview is not just a test run; it's a glimpse into the radiant, confident bride you'll become. Take the time to communicate openly with your stylist and embrace the opportunity to refine your bridal vision. Sometimes we need to make changes following the preview, and that's okay! That is what the appointment is for. With the right artists by your side, your wedding day look will be a stunning reflection of your unique style and personality. So here's to the start of your bridal beauty adventure!
